Ancient Genomics: Insights into human evolution and prehistory
Empowering direct examination of prehistoric human genomes at single nucleotide resolution level, ancient genomics holds great potential to reveal novel information about the genomewide variation of past human populations. This type of genetic information allows us to investigate the movements, admixture patterns and demographic history of ancient human populations. In this talk, I will briefly introduce the ancient genomics and tell three different stories that we generated with these approaches. These stories are about archaic humans who lived in three different parts of the world including Pontic Caspian Steppe, Anatolia and Scandinavia thousands of years ago – between Mesolithic and Iron Age. First, I will show who were the people living in Pontic Caspian Steppe during Bronze and Iron Ages and how did they genetically interact with other populations. Second, deeper in time, I will discuss the origins and population structure of the earliest Neolithic communities in Anatolia. Lastly I will demonstrate peopling of Mesolithic Scandinavia and genetic adaptation to high-latitudes.
