With our strong focus on promoting quality science, social benefits, and global innovation, we lead high-impact R&D projects in the fields of nanoscience, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and materials sciences. With our identity as a national laboratory, we are working to create a world-class R&D workforce, cutting-edge science on a global scale, and high-value-added technologies.
To that end, we at UNAM collaborate with leading organizations from different fields for the high-impact R&D projects we carry out. This week, we came together with MIGHT Malaysia who visited Turkey at the invitation of TÜBİTAK to discuss a joint project that includes different advanced technologies and innovative solutions.
The research began on December 01, 2021, under the investigatorship of Prof. Dr. Hilmi Volkan Demir and Prof. Dr. Evren Mutlugün and is set to continue for 24 months. It is being conducted exclusively for MIGHT and is entitled “Smart Nanocrystal Enabled Light-Emitting Diodes Lighting for Sustainable Controlled Environment Agriculture” The team is working to develop nanocrystal-enabled LEDs (NCLEDs) that are capable of matching all if not most of the lighting conditions for germination, seedling establishment, plant growth and flowering time, of various targeted crops.
In short, the project aims to combine two high-tech products exemplifying superior properties for the development of next-generation horticultural lighting platforms. In addition, in this specially designed semiconductor nanocrystal-based LED Lighting platform, our main innovation relies on using a new family of semiconductor nanocrystals, known as nanoplatelets (NPL), as novel light emitters. This technology, developed using UNAM’s advanced infrastructure, is of great importance in that it will be the first-ever reported example of a large-area demonstrator of a smart LED lighting based on nanoplatelet emitters. Industrial level production will be demonstrated by Nanome.
Prof. Dr. Hilmi Volkan Demir and UNAM Operations, Innovation and Infrastructure Manager Özgür Yıldırım hosted a meeting between UNAM and MIGHT Malaysia. It was attended by MIGHT Malaysia Co-Chairman Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid, MIGHT Malaysia Co-Chairman Mr. Tan Sri Satuk, Dr. Ir. Ahmad Tajuddin Ali, Mr. Datuk Khalilur Rahman Ebrahim, Mr. Datuk Dr. Mohd Yusoff Sulaiman, Mr. Mohd Zakwan Mohd Zabidi, Mr. Ida Semurni Abdullah Ali, Mr. Ahmad Razif Mohammad, research partners Prof. Dr. Evren Mutlugün and Dr. Tan Swee Tiam.
