Asst. Prof. Cüneyt Şahin’s project entitled “Quantum Defects in Wide Band-gap Semiconductors” has been selected to receive support after a call for proposals for the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) Benchmark and Development Access Modes. Asst. Prof. Şahin has been awarded 1,216,000 hours of computation time by the VEGA Supercomputer system for his project.
Defects and defect complexes are promising candidates for quantum information and quantum computing, as they utilize spin-light interactions in semiconductors. However, large-scale computing resources are required in order to identify such defects as well as suitable host materials. This project will lead the search for efficient quantum defects by utilizing theoretical and computational predictions and eliminating the need to conduct numerous experiments to explore technologically applicable systems.
EuroHPC JU was established in order to coordinate the computational resources of the European Union and participating countries, including Turkey, enabling them to pool their resources and make Europe a world leader in supercomputing. The EuroHPC is jointly funded by its members with a budget of around EUR 7 billion for the period 2021-2027.
