Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Asst. Prof. Fatih İnci recently published his groundbreaking research entitled “Xenon Difluoride Dry Etching for the Microfabrication of Solid Microneedles as a Potential Strategy in Transdermal Drug Delivery,” which appeared on the front cover of the prestigious journal Small.
While the significance of microneedles in drug release is increasing rapidly, their full potential and utilization in different fields are hindered by their high costs, limited production methods, and complex fabrication processes. For this regard, Asst. Prof. İnci and his team have developed a dry etching technique using xenon difluoride that enables the precise and delicate fabrication of thousands of microneedles in various sizes and shapes on a single patch. In addition to experimental manufacturing processes, these microneedles have undergone detailed examination through numerical simulations and have been validated for their penetration capabilities on diverse skin models. Offering a non-invasive, painless, and highly efficient potential for drug release studies, these microneedles offer tremendous promise.
