Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Asst. Prof. Cüneyt Şahin published his research entitled “Red Emission from Copper-Vacancy Color Centers in Zinc Sulfide Colloidal Nanocrystals” in ACS NANO, one of the most prestigious scientific journals publishing significant research in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
The research conducted by Asst. Prof. Cüneyt Şahin and his collaborators has made valuable contributions to the field by synthesizing controllable copper-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu) nanocrystals containing quantum color centers and confirming the thermodynamic stability and electronic structure of copper-vacancy complexes via first-principles calculations. Through temperature- and time-dependent measurements and an empirical dynamical model to understand the sub-bandgap photo-luminescent properties of these centers, the study significantly enriched knowledge in this area. The stability calculations, synthesis method, and electronic structure of the Cu-Vacancy complex discovered by Dr. Şahin and the collaborators is a critical step in comprehending and advancing quantum point defects in the ZnS matrix.
