Tuva Cihangir Atasever, who was originally selected for the historic first trip to space for Türkiye, is now officially set to embark on his space journey within the next months as part of a selected group of astronauts. Atasever, a graduate of Bilkent University’s Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, recently met with Asst. Prof. Fatih İnci and his team at the Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM). Dr. İnci and Nedim Hacıosmanoğlu and Murat Alp Güngen from his team, whose research endeavors are concentrated in the innovative technology realms of micro/nano-scale technologies and biomedical engineering at UNAM, discussed the details of the project they plan to carry out in suborbital flight with Mr. Atasever. In this study, extracellular vesicles in biospecimens samples collected from the astronaut will be isolated using custom-made microfluidic chips; any alterations on these vesicles will be examined; and should it be determined that they possess adaptability to varying conditions, these vesicles will be transferred to healthy cells; and their responses will be investigated. The ultimate aim of this study is to contribute to the development of therapies enabling astronauts to adapt more rapidly to microgravity conditions prior to their journey into space in the future.
