Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Asst. Prof. Mustafa Ordu has recently had his research published in Small, one of the leading journals in its field. The work will be featured on the cover of the journal’s September 2025 issue.
Titled “Piezoelectric–Triboelectric Hybrid Nanogenerator for Energy Harvesting and Self-Powered Sensing Applications,” the research provides a comprehensive evaluation of piezoelectric–triboelectric hybrid nanogenerators, also referred to as PT-HNGs, covering their mechanisms for converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, structural design, performance enhancement strategies, and potential for broad application potential.
The findings reveal that PT-HNGs can significantly improve energy efficiency, while also highlighting the challenges that remain in areas such as size optimization, material compatibility, durability, and electronic integration. The research team emphasizes that the use of flexible, biocompatible, and environmentally friendly materials—combined with AI-assisted design optimization—will be critical to advancing this technology. This innovative approach is expected to pave the way for energy-autonomous applications across a range of fields, from wearable technologies and health monitoring systems to Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and self-sustaining smart devices.
