Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Assoc. Prof. Engin Durgun has recently collaborated on the study entitled “Nonlinear Optical Response in Layer-Stacked Gallene with Ferroelectric Polarization.” The study was carried out jointly with the Max Planck Institute and the University of Tübingen and published in Advanced Materials, one of the most prestigious journals in materials science.
Assoc. Prof. Durgun and his team demonstrated reversible electric polarization at room temperature in specially synthesized layer-stacked gallenene nanocrystals prepared in a liquid gallium environment. Using second harmonic generation (SHG), the researchers showed that the material exhibits a strong optical response to light and that this property can be tuned by temperature, angular orientation, and electrical stimuli. The study also reported resistive switching behavior in devices developed during the research. These findings represent a significant step forward, opening new avenues for future studies in 2D ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity, and topological superconductivity.
