Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM) Asst. Prof. Mustafa Ordu has published a new study in the field of wearable sensor technologies in Advanced Composites and Hybrid Materials. Entitled “Tunable Conductivity and Porosity in Nanocomposite Fibers for Multimodal Wearable Sensing,” the study presents an innovative approach to next-generation nanocomposite fibers designed for wearable sensor applications.
Asst. Prof. Ordu and his team successfully fabricated flexible and porous nanocomposite fibers that can be integrated into textile structures. Using an original fabrication method integrated with the thermal fiber drawing process, the researchers produced fibers extending to tens of meters in length with precisely tunable physical properties. The developed nanocomposite fibers were shown to detect temperature, pressure, and cardiovascular-related biophysical signals within a single fiber architecture. This structure allows key properties—including electrical conductivity, breathability, and mechanical robustness—to be jointly and precisely optimized, resulting in consistent sensing performance under various conditions.
