UNAM’s Prof. Hilmi Volkan Demir’s Study on Colloidal Quantum Wells Enabling Broadband Light Emission Published in Laser & Photonics Reviews

Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM) Director and Chair of the Materials Science and Nanotechnology Graduate Program Prof. Hilmi Volkan Demir and his research team recently published their work, “Exciton Self-Trapping Enables Broadband Emission in Two-Monolayer Colloidal CdSe Quantum Wells,” in Laser & Photonics Reviews.

Prof. Demir and his team demonstrated that atomically thin CdSe colloidal quantum wells can emit intense light across a broad range of wavelengths without the use of dopants or additional layered structures. The study showed that this light emission results from the spontaneous localization of energy carriers, known as excitons, within the material and that the system can achieve a high light-emission efficiency of approximately 90 percent. The work is significant for the development of highly efficient broadband and white-light sources that use simpler and more stable material structures.
