Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM) Director and Chair of the Materials Science and Nanotechnology Graduate Program Prof. Hilmi Volkan Demir and his research team recently published their work, “Colloidal Quantum Wells Enable Phototransistors with Enhanced Visible Light Detection,” in Laser & Photonics Reviews.
Through their research, Prof. Demir and his team developed a new structure that enables Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (IGZO)-based phototransistors—which are traditionally only sensitive enough to detect ultraviolet light—to also detect visible light. By integrating colloidal quantum wells into the phototransistors, the researchers enabled the devices to operate with much higher sensitivity across a broad range of the visible spectrum, from blue to red light. The system’s ability to be fabricated using low-cost and scalable production methods is significant for the development of more sensitive and adaptive devices for use in light sensors, smart displays, and a range of optoelectronic applications.
