UNAM associate Assoc. Prof. Ferdi Karadaş has received a Georg Forster Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, following his nomination by Friedrich Schiller University and the Leibniz Institute for Photonic Technology in Germany. Dr. Karadaş was recognized for his pioneering work on the development of low-cost and robust catalytic systems for water splitting.
The Georg Forster Research Award is given to up to six awardees annually, in recognition of a researcher’s entire body of achievements to date. Academics in all disciplines whose fundamental discoveries hold promise of significant impact on their own discipline and beyond are eligible for nomination. Recipients of the award are expected to continue developing research-based solutions to the specific challenges facing transitional and developing countries.
Award winners are invited to carry out research projects of their choosing in cooperation with experts in Germany who work in a relevant field of inquiry. Dr. Karadaş will be collaborating with Prof. Benjamin Dietzek-Ivanšić with the aim of elucidating the charge transfer mechanism in iron-sensitized water oxidation photoanodes.
