Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Assoc. Prof. Selim Hanay recently published his groundbreaking research entitled “Atmospheric-Pressure Mass Spectrometry by Single-Mode Nanoelectromechanical Systems” in the prestigious journal Nano Letters. As one of the most significant scientific journals in the field, Nano Letters is published by the American Chemical Society and covers all aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology, including their sub-disciplines. The paper is also selected as ACS Editors’ Choice, which is chosen as a single paper amongst all papers published by ACS each day.
Assoc. Prof. Hanay and his team used nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) architecture in their research, and demonstrated mass spectrometry under entirely atmospheric conditions and with a simplified measurement system (using a single vibration mode) specifically in this paper. In their experiments using polystyrene and gold nanoparticles, they successfully obtained mass spectra with just one mode and demonstrated improved area capture efficiency. This advancement represents a significant step forward in the field of NEMS-MS, bringing it closer to practical applications for measuring the mass of nanoparticles.
