Assoc. Prof. Selim Hanay, faculty member of Bilkent University Department of Mechanical Engineering and a researcher at Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM) and his team have unveiled a pioneering device capable of precisely categorizing and distinguishing microplastic particles from other microscopic entities.

Assoc. Prof. Selim Hanay and his team’s research entitled, “Permittivity-Based Microparticle Classification by the Integration of Impedance Cytometry and Microwave Resonators,” has been published in the prestigious Advanced Materials journal. This novel approach integrates impedance cytometry and microwave resonators to detect microplastic particles with remarkable sensitivity and specificity. Leveraging the distinctive electrical properties of microplastic particles, the device effectively discerns them from other microscopic counterparts. Assoc. Prof. Hanay successfully demonstrated the device’s capability to classify various types of microparticles, including detecting microplastic particles as tiny as 20 micrometers in size.

This innovative technology presents a swift, portable, and cost-efficient solution for monitoring and mitigating microplastic pollution, making a significant contribution to environmental conservation endeavors.
