The prestigious NanoDay event, organized by the Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM), once again brought together renowned figures from the global scientific community. The first event was held in 2014 and has been growing ever since. This year’s event took place on May 15, 2024 to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between the 250+ participants, including scientists, researchers, students, and industry representatives from Turkey and around the world.
This year’s NanoDay event welcomed Prof. Monika Ritsch-Marte from the Innsbruck Medical University in Austria, who specializes in biomedical imaging; Prof. Pepijn Pinkse from Twente University in the Netherlands, presenting his work on cold atoms and quantum optics; and Prof. Sergey Gaponenko from the Belarusian Academy of Sciences, who is renowned for his significant contributions in the fields of nanophotonics and semiconductor nanocrystals.
NanoDay 2024 kicked off with an opening speech by Prof. Dr. Hilmi Volkan Demir, the Director of UNAM and the Institute of Materials Science and Nanotechnology (MSN). Following that, Bilkent University Rector Prof. Dr. Kürşat Aydoğan emphasized the significance of the event and provided inspiration to participating professionals and students. In the first session, Prof. Monika Ritsch-Marte delivered a captivating speech entitled “Optical and Acoustic Trapping for Tomographic Imaging.” The program continued with Prof. Pepijn Pinkse’s presentation on “Quantum Identity Authentication and Quantum Information Processing with Nanophotonic Structures.” Prof. Sergey Gaponenko followed with his talk on “Colloidal Nanophotonics: From Fundamental Science to Innovative Technologies.” The keynote speakers of NanoDay 2024 ended the day with a panel entitled “Crossroads and Career Decisions in Science and Academia for Young Scientists” to encourage participants to focus on their future goals.
The program also showcased captivating poster presentations by MSN students. As a part of the event, the winners of the NanoArt competition were announced and honored in order to promote the appreciation and excitement of images from diverse disciplines that were captured at the nanometer scale through the innovative use of imaging methods and technologies.
