Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Asst. Prof. Fatih İnci, along with Eylül Gülşen Yılmaz and Nedim Hacıosmanoğlu from his team, have recently published their research entitled “Revolutionizing IBD Research with On-Chip Models of Disease Modeling and Drug Screening” in Trends in Biotechnology. This collaborative work was conducted in partnership with Prof. Bahtiyar Yılmaz along with PhD student Sebastian Bruno Ulrich Jordi from Maurice Müller Laboratories in the Department for Biomedical Research at the University of Bern in Switzerland.
This study represents a significant innovation in the field of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) research. Developed as an alternative to traditional animal models, the organ-on-a-chip technology simulates the microscopic interactions between intestinal cells and microbes, providing a more realistic model of the intestinal ecosystem. Using 3D intestinal tissue models, the researchers explored cellular healing processes and inflammatory responses, compiling studies that contribute to a deeper understanding of gut diseases. This article aims to shed light on new approaches for treating complex diseases like IBD, facilitating faster drug development processes.
