Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Asst. Prof. İbrahim Sarpkaya’s research in the field of two-dimensional semiconductors and quantum photonics was featured on the front cover of ACS Photonics.
The research, entitled “Enhanced Interlayer Exciton Lifetime and Temporal Coherence in Free-Standing WSe₂/WS₂ Heterobilayers,” investigated the effect of the substrate on the optical properties of interlayer excitons in structures formed by stacking two atomically thin semiconductor materials. The study showed that excitons in free-standing regions emitted light more strongly, had longer lifetimes, and maintained temporal coherence over extended periods. The findings demonstrate that reducing substrate-induced energy losses and disorder can significantly improve the optical performance of these structures, and they provide an important foundation for the development of next-generation optoelectronic and quantum technologies.
