Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Demir recently published his research entitled “1 W Single-Mode Large-Area Edge-Emitting Laser via Non-Hermitian Spatial Mode Filtering” in Laser & Photonics Reviews.
Asst. Prof. Demir and his team developed an innovative semiconductor laser design based on non-Hermitian spatial mode filtering. By selectively suppressing unwanted higher-order transverse modes, the researchers achieved 1 W of output power with near-diffraction-limited beam quality in a large-area edge-emitting laser. The laser’s wider waveguide distributes the electrical current over a larger area, enabling operation at a lower current density than conventional narrow-waveguide single-mode lasers with comparable output power. This reduced current density could enhance long-term laser reliability. These findings open new opportunities for developing high-power, high-brightness semiconductor lasers for applications including optical pumping, optical communications, sensing, and materials processing.
