Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Asst. Prof. İbrahim Sarpkaya recently published his research entitled “Steady State Valley Zeeman-like Splitting in WSe₂–MoSe₂ Heterobilayers via Heterostrain-Induced Pseudomagnetic Field” in npj 2D Materials and Applications.
In this study, Asst. Prof. İbrahim Sarpkaya introduces an innovative method for controlling the energy states of excitons in structures created by combining two different atomically thin semiconductor materials, without the need for a strong external magnetic field. Asst. Prof. Sarpkaya and his research team exploited differences in mechanical strain between the materials to generate a pseudomagnetic field of approximately 8 Tesla, thereby achieving a pronounced splitting of degenerate electronic energy states. This finding opens new possibilities for harnessing valley pseudospin to carry and process information, offering significant potential for developing next-generation quantum and information-processing technologies that do not require strong external magnetic fields.
UNAM’s Assoc. Prof. Engin Durgun and his research team contributed to the study through computational analyses.
