Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center’s (UNAM) Assoc. Prof. Fatih İnci has published his research entitled “Fluid Shear Stress Modulates Epithelial–Mesenchymal Transition and Drug Resistance in 3D Cancer Models” in ACS Measurement Science Au. The research originated from the MSc thesis of Eylül Gülşen Yılmaz, who completed her MSc in Materials Science and Nanotechnology (MSN) at UNAM, Bilkent University, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. İnci and is currently pursuing her PhD.
Assoc. Prof. İnci and his research team developed an innovative three-dimensional tumor model to investigate how cancer cells behave and respond to anticancer drugs under conditions that closely resemble those found in the human body. Using a system that mimics the physical forces exerted on cells by fluid flow in the body, the researchers demonstrated significant changes in the characteristics of breast cancer cells and their responses to drug treatment. The study revealed that fluid flow influences cancer cell behavior and biological processes associated with drug resistance, while conventional laboratory models fail to adequately capture these changes. These findings are particularly important for advancing our understanding of cancer and developing new testing platforms that enable researchers to evaluate the effectiveness of anticancer drugs under conditions that more closely reflect those within the human body.
